VSCCA Moving Forward

There is something exhilarating about piloting an older sporting machine on a racetrack. It’s a delicate balance, skillfully driving a car whose narrow tires, vintage suspension, and performance limits are explored—often in the close company of a field made up of similar vintage machinery. Winning becomes unimportant as the art of driving an old warhorse at or near its limits on a legendary racing circuit is its own reward.

For more than 65 years, the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA) has offered a unique blend of vintage racing, automotive enthusiasm, and camaraderie. The club—and it is first and foremost a club—provides the opportunity for its members to exercise their vintage sports and racing cars in a way that respects their heritage and provenance, while also providing fun and safe good-natured competition.

If you are the lucky owner of such an automobile, you owe it to yourself to join us—either as a beginner in our “Driven to Race Autocross” program, at our annual VSCCA Vintage Racing School, one of several tours, or as an established driver at one of our track or hillclimb events. If you are already a VSCCA member and know of a friend or a family member who has yet to discover our unique events, invite them to join in the fun—as a driver, course marshal, or event official. Our club survives and is successful because of the passion of all of its members and we invite you to join us.

Tentative schedule:

Starting at 8:00 AM: Meet in the designated VSCCA area at the Audrain Museum Cars & Coffee and enjoy breakfast available for purchase. Take in the wide variety of cars that attend these C&Cs.
10:00 AM sharp: Drivers meeting at location to be advised.
10:15 AM as sharp as possible: Depart for drive.
Approximately 10:45, a stop for bantering, walking, and photos at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown.
Approximately 11:45, continue drive through Jamestown and over to the back roads of S. Kingstown and Charlestown.
Around 1:00-1:15 PM: Lunch at Sons of Liberty Spirits, 1425 Kingstown Road, South Kingstown, RI 02879. Food and drink for purchase.

The tour will start with breakfast & brews at the Audrain Museum Cars & Coffee at Second Beach, also known as Sachuest Beach, located at 315 Sachuest Point Road, Middletown, RI 02842. The tour will head over Newport Bridge to Jamestown, and down to scenic Beavertail, at the southern tip of the island. From there the tour will do a loop of the northern end of Jamestown and cross Jamestown Bridge to some fun back roads through S. Kingstown and Charlestown.

We'll end the tour at Sons of Liberty Spirits in South Kingstown, RI where food and drink will be available for purchase. They produce amazing non-alcoholic drinks for those driving. (The VSCCA recommends no driving after adult beverages.)

If you plan on trailering your classic to the event, please advise Bill Shields. The Audrain Museum is working on arrangements for trailer drop-offs in the Newport area. We’ll get you the details when everything is finalized. The Shields place (5 minutes from the Sons of Liberty) can take 5-6 trailers and may be most convenient if you will be heading back to CT-NY.

Our Vintage Racing Drivers’ School is similar to a full-on race school with one major difference – it teaches you about vintage racing and the mind set and attitude essential to get involved. You’ll have a great time and will want to return for VSCCA races, hill climbs and tours.

The school is one of the easiest ways to get into vintage racing and with VSCCA approval in hand, you can participate in other VMC vintage organizations’ events across the country.

Driven to Race Autocross

Driven to Race is a half-day, super-fun autocross event.

The best way to get a taste of the track with little risk. Cars are spread out and you can test the limits of your car.

You’ll get about 2 hours of track time with professional instruction on the half-mile Proving Grounds autocross course and lap the iconic Lime Rock road course. Two groups of 12 cars each and you can enter with just about any car.

Add 20 minutes of paced laps on the big track.

The Wilbraham Hill Climb is a re-enactment of the 1908 historic climb up Wilbraham Mountain, an unofficial proving ground for many of the early automobile and motorcycle manufacturers of the Brass Era.

The 1908 event was put on by the Automobile Club of Springfield and sanctioned by the racing board of the American Automobile Association. The cars were timed over a measured mile by the Timing Club of New York City.

This is a town wide celebration that includes a car show, craft show, plant sale, food vendors and a DJ.

The inaugural VSCCA Historic Roads of PA and NJ Tour

Join the VSCCA on a day-long tour as we explore the back roads of historic Bucks and Hunterdon Counties. We have multiple stops planned to give your legs and bladder a break. Attendees are welcome to drive the entire day, half the day, or just dinner, or any combination. We will have tour routes available at the lunch location.

The roads have been selected for the views as well as the surface condition, so bring out your vintage car! There is a special request for prewar cars.

The Empire Cup will again be celebrating the Sports Racers of the 1950’s and 1960’s by offering a dedicated grid in this traditional VSCCA event.

Two full days of racing, plenty of unmuffled track time (at least 7 track sessions over the 2 days). This event is unmuffled and has timing and scoring using transponders. You can enter both your VSCCA car and a later closed wheel 1960’s – 70s race car. We will have a Friday evening party.

Cross-promoting our White Mountain Grand Prix and the VARAC Vintage Grand Prix makes sense considering the events' proximity.

The VARAC event is special and well worth the drive. The Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is a marvel, still as it was when built in 1961 and raced on by the greats of Formula One and Can-Am. Fast and special.

How can you resist a field of over 200 cars, free VARAC-branded beer, bands, and free food every night. VSCCA racers, Charles Bordin, Storm Field, Stephen Vapaa and Kobus Reyneke participated in 2024.

Back to it’s original late June date, the annual event will take place at Thompson Speedway in the beautiful “quiet corner” of Connecticut.

As in the past, the VSCCA and the VRG will be co-sanctioning the event this year. Thursday the 19^th is an optional test day. We will have two grids, one for the fastest cars, the second for Pre-War and less fast cars.

Sonny Hayes, a Formula One driver who raced in the 1990s, has a horrible crash, forcing him to retire from Formula One and start racing in other disciplines. A Formula One team owner and friend contacts Hayes and asks him to come out of retirement to mentor rookie prodigy Joshua Pearce for the Apex Grand Prix team.

A five-mile, adult roller coaster that climbs 3200 feet. With a newly repaved full course over five miles in length, this is the quintessential VSCCA event, a must if you have not done it.
